Class 5

Book Review

Online, pre-course work

The fifth assignment will be a book review. Click here for a list of pre-approved books. We will entertain suggestions for books not on the pre-approved list.

***This assignment is to be submitted in HTML format, see below for instructions.*** (click here)

In your review, please include the fundamental insights that the book provided you, personally. We do not need you to describe all of the topics that the book covers, but rather to focus on what you feel are the most important points. Reviews should be 1-2 pages (300-500 words). Upon completion, reviews will be posted online. All reviews must be submitted on or before August 28th.

We will limit the number of students reporting on any given book to seven.  When you select a book, please email Richard R. Johnson so that he can add your name to the list of reviewers for a particular book.

HTML formatting Instructions:

**This assignment is to be submitted in HTML format.  For best results, use Microsoft Word to create the file (if you have no other HTML experience).  Using tables to align text and graphics is HIGHLY recommended; otherwise, your HTML document will not look the same as your Word document.

To create your HTML file for submission, open Microsoft Word.  To create a table (AGAIN, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), go to TABLE, "Insert...Table."  From there, you can adjust the column width and determine how many cells you want (rows and columns) and click "OK."  From the popup window, you can also select custom table formats that have already been formed, if one matches the look you are trying to achieve.

After you have inserted your text, data, and graphics (if necessary), you want to save the file.  It is recommended that you first save a copy as a WORD DOCUMENT, and then go back to do the following second step.

SAVING A WORD DOCUMENT AS AN HTML FILE:

  • Go to FILE, "Save as Web Page..." and locate the directory on your hard drive in which you would like to save the file.  Choose an appropriate filename, and click "OK."  This will create an HTML file of your Word document in that directory.  If your file contains any images or graphics, this process will create a separate folder for those files in the directory which you chose IN ADDITION TO the HTML file.
  • To submit the file for grading, please send the HTML file and extra File folder (if necessary) as attachments in an E-mail to Richard R. Johnson.
